Autism & Neurodevelopmental Assessments

Understanding individual strengths, differences and support needs

Autism can present differently from one person to another and across different stages of life.

For some families, concerns begin in early childhood. For others, differences become more noticeable as social, educational or everyday demands increase. Adults may also seek assessment after recognising longstanding patterns in their own experiences.

At Nutricula Psychology, our comprehensive autism and neurodevelopmental assessments bring together information about development, communication, behaviour, sensory experiences and everyday functioning to build a clearer understanding of the whole person.

Our aim is to provide clarity, explain the findings in meaningful language and offer practical recommendations for what comes next.

Could an Autism Assessment Be Helpful?

People seek autism assessments for many different reasons.

There may be longstanding differences involving:

  • Social communication and relationships

  • Understanding social expectations

  • Flexibility and adjusting to change

  • Sensory processing

  • Repetitive behaviours or routines

  • Highly focused interests

  • Coping with social or environmental demands

These experiences do not automatically mean someone is autistic.

Some characteristics can overlap with ADHD, anxiety, language differences, trauma and other developmental factors.

A comprehensive assessment considers the broader pattern rather than relying on one behaviour, questionnaire or observation.

Autism Assessments for Children and Adolescents

You may be noticing things that are difficult to put into words

Sometimes parents have concerns from early childhood. Other times, differences become more noticeable when school, friendships and everyday expectations become more complex.

Educators or other health professionals may also notice patterns and suggest exploring them further.

1

Communication & Connection

Your child may communicate or interact differently, find friendships difficult to navigate, or need more support understanding social situations.

2

Change & Predictability

Changes in plans, transitions or unexpected situations may feel particularly difficult. Your child may rely on routines or predictability to feel comfortable.

3

Sensory Experience

Sounds, textures, clothing, food, busy environments or other sensory experiences may feel much more intense, or be experienced differently.

4

Emotional, Interest & Behaviour

You may notice strong emotional responses, repetitive behaviours or highly focused interests that play an important role in how your child engages with the world.

These experiences don't automatically mean your child is autistic. What matters is understanding the broader pattern across their development and everyday life.

For some children, differences are apparent early. For others, they become clearer as the demands of school, friendships and independence increase.

A comprehensive assessment helps bring those pieces together so we can better understand your child's individual profile.

Sometimes the questions come much later.

You may have spent years knowing that certain parts of life seem to require more effort for you than they do for other people, without fully understanding why.

You may recognise lifelong patterns such as:

Social situations requiring conscious effort
You may find yourself thinking carefully about what to say, how to respond or what is expected in social situations.

Feeling overwhelmed by particular environments
Noise, crowds, sensory input, unexpected changes or competing demands may take a significant amount of energy to manage.

A strong preference for predictability
Routine, preparation or knowing what to expect may help everyday life feel more manageable.

Looking back and seeing a pattern
Experiences from childhood, school, friendships, relationships or work may begin to make more sense when viewed together.

An adult autism assessment explores both your current experiences and your developmental history.

Where helpful, information from a partner, family member or someone who knows you well may also contribute to developing a fuller picture.

The purpose is to better understand your individual profile, including your strengths, differences and support needs.

Autism Assessments for Adults

What Does an Autism Assessment Involve?

We look at the whole picture.

Autism cannot be understood through one questionnaire, one behaviour or one assessment session.

A comprehensive autism assessment brings together information from different parts of a person's life and development.

1

Understanding Your Story

We begin by exploring developmental history, current concerns and the experiences that have led you or your family to seek an assessment.

2

Gathering Information

Depending on the individual, this may include clinical interviews, standardised questionnaires and information from parents, partners or educators.

3

Assessment & Observation

Behavioural observation, cognitive testing and autism-specific assessment tools, including the ADOS-2, may form part of the assessment where appropriate.

4

Looking Beyond One Explanation

We consider the broader picture, including alternative or co-occurring explanations for the experiences being explored.

5

Bringing the Pieces Together

Information is considered within the person's developmental, educational, family and emotional context to build a comprehensive individual profile.

The result isn't simply a collection of scores. It's a clearer understanding of the person behind them.

Autism Assessments for Children and Adolescents

Clarity that goes beyond a diagnosis

A comprehensive autism assessment is designed to build a clearer picture of the individual, including their strengths, differences, functional needs and learning profile.

Where appropriate, this may provide diagnostic clarification. But the value of assessment extends beyond identifying whether diagnostic criteria are met.

We want you to understand what the findings mean in everyday life and what can help moving forward.

Your Comprehensive Report

Your written report may bring together:

Understanding the findings
Diagnostic conclusions where appropriate, alongside an explanation of social communication and behavioural patterns.

Recognising strengths
A clearer picture of individual strengths alongside areas where additional support may be helpful.

Understanding everyday needs
Insight into sensory needs, emotional regulation, functional support needs and the individual's learning or cognitive profile where assessed.

Seeing the broader picture
Consideration of relevant co-occurring concerns and how different factors may interact.

Knowing what comes next
Practical recommendations for home, school, study or work, with guidance regarding further medical or allied health support where appropriate.

The aim is for the report to become something you can understand and use, rather than simply a document containing assessment scores or a diagnostic label.

Psychologist, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist?

It can be confusing to know which professional to approach when considering an autism assessment.

Psychologists with relevant training conduct comprehensive psychological and neurodevelopmental assessments using clinical interviews, developmental information, standardised measures and autism-specific assessment tools.

Depending on the person's circumstances, medical or multidisciplinary input may also form part of the diagnostic pathway.

In some cases, collaboration with a paediatrician, psychiatrist, speech pathologist, occupational therapist or another professional may be recommended.

You do not need to work out the entire pathway yourself before contacting us.

If another professional would be beneficial, we can discuss this as part of the assessment process.

What Happens After an Autism Assessment?

Assessment should provide a pathway forward.

Following the assessment, your psychologist will bring together the information gathered and explain the findings during a feedback appointment.

You'll have an opportunity to ask questions and understand what the results mean.

Where appropriate, recommendations may relate to:

  • Support at home

  • School or educational adjustments

  • Workplace or study considerations

  • Emotional regulation

  • Allied health support

  • Psychological support

  • Medical consultation

  • Further assessment

The aim is for you to understand both the findings and what you can do with that information.
